Welcome to this comprehensive guide on selecting the perfect dog food to keep your furry companion happy and healthy. Whether you're a new dog owner or looking to make an informed change in your pet's diet, this series of expert tips will provide you with the knowledge you need to make the best choice.

In this article, you'll explore essential considerations for choosing dog food that suits your pet's nutritional needs, dietary preferences, and overall well-being.

In her three years, we have changed Bella's food about four times, as for various reasons she's stopped liking it 😅. Your first choice won't probably be the final one, and your dog won't eat it for the rest of its life. So, don't worry if at some point your dog stops enjoying its food, and you need to change it.

In another article, I'll talk about how to transition between dog foods, but today let's focus on how to select the right food for your furry friend.

1. Read Ingredients List

My first advice for selecting the right dog food would be to look at the ingredients list in the package.

Look for options featuring whole foods like fresh meats, vegetables, fruits, and grains to ensure a well-balanced diet. Check that a clear protein source, preferably meat, ranks high among the ingredients, and look for healthy fats like flax oil and salmon oil for essential omega-3 fatty acids.

You'll want to avoid foods loaded with preservatives and empty fillers like wheat and soy.

Keep in mind that ingredient order reflects weight, with moisture-rich components appearing at the top.

If you live in the USA, you can also verify if the packaging contains the AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) statement. This indicates compliance with nutritional standards for complete and balanced dog food.

2. Wet or Dry Dog Food – What's better?

The simple answer is that both options can be great for your dog, as long as they are nutritionally complete and balanced.

The first difference is that wet dog food contains more moisture than dry food. The first one could be a good choice if your dog has dental issues or struggles with chewing.

Secondly, wet food boasts fresh ingredients, but has a shorter shelf life and requires more frequent restocking, while dry food has a longer shelf life and is often more budget-friendly and convenient.

So, in conclusion, you should make your choice based on your dog's specific needs – and preferences. But if you want to go with the cheaper option, then go with dry food.

3. Consider Age, Size, and Activity Level of Your Dog

Another important factor when choosing your dog's food is your dog's characteristics, such as age, size, and activity level.

  • Age: Dog foods come specially formulated for puppies, adults or senior dogs.
  • Size: They are also usually designed for small, medium or large dogs.
  • Activity level: Many dog food brands – especially those of higher quality – also offer different options depending on your dog's activity level. More active dogs will need more nutrients, while more passive dogs may require a specific diet to keep weight off.

4. Does Your Dog Have Any Allergies or Special Needs?

Some foods are supposedly designed for “allergy dogs”, but the reality is that dogs can be allergic to a variety of components and there isn't one food that considers all possible allergies.

Some ingredients that many dogs are often allergic to are chicken, dairy, and beef.

If your dog has any allergies – or you think that it may have –, the best advice is to consult with your veterinarian to make sure you feed him a suitable food.

Your dog may also have some special needs, and many popular brands have foods specially formulated for some common conditions such as digestive or urinary problems, bone diseases and other health issues.

5. Are Gluten-Free or Grain-Free Dog Foods Better?

You might have heard that Gluten-Free or Grain-Free foods are better for your dog's nutrition and health. Honestly, this is a very common myth and brands often use these terms as a marketing strategy.

Grains are a great source of carbohydrates and energy for your dog. And unlike in people, dogs are rarely allergic to grains or gluten. In fact, they are more likely to be allergic to other ingredients such as beef or chicken, as I mentioned earlier.

6. Read Customer Reviews

Doing your own research is probably the best way to choose your dog's food.

My recommendation is that you shouldn't to be influenced by the opinion of content creators, TikTok or YouTube videos, since generally influencers get commissions or exchanges for their publications, and will not always be the most objective.

If you have two or three dog food options in mind, you can read reviews from other customers on popular e-commerce sites, or you can even look for discussions on forums.

Comments from real customers will always be the best source of information, in addition – of course – to the opinion of a professional.

7. Try Out Some Samples

As I experienced with Bella, your dog won't always like the healthiest or most nutritious food, and it's important that he does like it, otherwise you could have a lot of trouble getting him to eat properly.

Most local pet stores offer free samples of the most popular dog food brands. If not, I recommend buying the smallest bag (usually 2 kg or 6 lbs) to avoid losing a lot of money in case your dog doesn't like its food.

8. Ask Your Veterinarian for Their Advice

Last but not least, don't hesitate to consult your dog's veterinarian and ask for their recommendation about what food you should feed your dog.

You'll find millions of recommendations on the internet about what is the best food for your dog or how to choose it. But it will always be better to get the opinion of a professional who knows your dog and its needs.
